Another decorated Cake - Dora Cake

I had another opportunity to decorate another cake. It was for my friend's daughter's birthday. When I asked the little girl what cake she wants, she said without even batting her eye lashes "Dora Cake".
Before you all start even reading through this post, let me tell you that pictures weren't taken keeping in mind about posting them on the blog. I didn't even take any pictures and my friends who took pictures aren't food bloggers like I am. The main objective of this post is to tell you how easy it is to decorate a cake for your little one if you have lots of patience and a little bit of imagination and of course tools.
Cake board was covered with dora gift wrapping paper which, again was covered with food safe plastic.

Cake was a four layered Chocolate cake made with this recipe. I made four 9" rounds to get the height. Filling was cookies and creme filling made by mixing crushed oreos with my standard butter cream. This time I used 60% butter and 40 % shortening to make the buttercream and I think I will stick to this ratio. It was very easy to work with. I crumb coated the cake after filling them and did a thick layer of buttercream on the top and the sides were just crumb coated.
I tinted fondant mixed with equal amount of gum paste different colors for the stars. I cut out the stars and the letters and stuck them together with water. These cut outs were supported by a florist wire (remember that the florist wire is not food safe) which were inserted into lollipop sticks so that the lollipop sticks would touch the cake. I made the face for couple of stars which got the paint for the eyes and mouth after they were dry. These were left to dry for about 48 hours.

I made the number 3 with fondant gum paste mixture. I inserted a wooden skewer to stick it into the cake. 3 hours before the party, the number 3 broke and fell. I had to make another one and to make sure it doesn't crumble since there was no time for drying, I supported it with the florist wire. No part of the wire was touching the cake. That explains the pictures not taken by me.

Moving on to the assembly, I cut out the door and windows using the brown tinted fondant gumpaste mixture. I took a toothpick and drew lines to imitate the wood grain. I then painted that with brown gel mixed with some lemon extract. I used black paint for the handle. I stuck the door and windows and then started working on the edge of the cake. I cut out circles and cut them in half and started placing them overlapping to make the top edge to imitate the walls of the castle. I used girly colors since the cake was for a little girl.

The entire cake was then covered with icing piped with round tip to imitate the stones. I dipped a piece of paper towel in corn starch and touched the tips so that they go flat.

Bottom border was made with grass tip. When all these was done, I started piping wines around the door and windows and piped small dots with colored frosting and spread them using a brush to mimic tiny flowers. I then made trees using ice cream cones and stuck them to the side.

Pathway to the door is brown sugar. Pond is frosting colored blue and thinned down with corn syrup. Rocks around the pond are fondant and some were candies.

Finally I stuck the stars which had the birthday girl's name to the back, stars with faces to the front and number 3 in the middle. Dora, boots and the unicorn carriage are toys.

Hope you have enjoyed reading this post. I was very happy with this cake since I got a 'wow' from a person who never compliments anyone. (If you have been reading this blog, you know whom I am talking about!!)

Enjoy!! Pin It
