Car Cake

I usually offer to make the cake for my close friends' kid's birthday party. Some decline the offer, but some take it. One such friend who took the offer asked me to make something in 'Cars' theme as that is what her son likes the most. If not for this request, I probably would never have made a 'Car' themed cake since I have two girls and they are not into cars. I definitely not ever going to make this my profession so there is no way I would get a chance there. Thought I'll share couple of pictures with you all.

Cake was made in 8" rounds. Two layers of vanilla and two layers of banana. I cut a piece from all the layers so that I could put them together. Filling is strawberry filling. Icing is my buttercream with real butter. I opened up an Excel spread sheet and after adjusting the width of the column, started filling alternate cells with black. I printed that out and used it for the flag. I have used a lollipop stick to make the flag. The banner was also made using computer paper and the poles are skewers cut to required height. I could've made these two in fondant to make them completely edible, but since these fondant creations are dried and no body eats anyway, I chose the easier option. Cars are real. I bought the matchbox cars (I believe that is what they call them) and since I didn't feel like putting them on the cake directly, cut a piece of wax paper and stuck it to the icing. I placed the cars on the top of the wax paper.

Grass is made using grass tip (multiple hole tip) and the fake sand is brown sugar. Any of you  want to make this kind of cake for your boys and have questions, let me know. I'll try to answer to the best of my knowledge.
Another final picture..
See how there is a hump on the front where the two cakes are stuck together? I used a very thin foam core as the board. Even when I double layered it, it wasn't sturdy enough to carry this cake. Every time I picked it to move, it bent in the middle due to weight and caused this hump. I tried to fix it, but even after fixing it, every time I moved, it would repeat. Lesson learnt - go buy a stronger foam core for next project.

Enjoy!!

  2. Ms.Chitchat, thanks for the comment. For the grass, all I did was thin down the buttercream a little bit with corn syrup and use the grass tip and pipe using the pastry bag. You can get the tip in cake decorating supply stores. It is by wilton and has multiple holes in it. Hope this helps.
